Iran ranked 2nd in "humanities and arts" and "social sciences" fields among Islamic countries in International Science Production

The Islamic Republic of Iran ranked second in the production of international science in the fields of "humanities and arts" and "social sciences" among Islamic countries.

Every year, about 150,000 articles by Iranian researchers have been indexed in national and international databases, and the analytical review Islamic World Science and Technology Monitoring and Citation Institute (ISC) in international databases such as Web of Science (WoS) shows that the fields of Engineering, Medicine and Health, Agriculture and Environment and Basic Sciences have a greater share in Iran scientific production.

According to the WoS database, the Islamic Republic of Iran ranks 17th in the production of international science, and the share of “humanities and arts” in 2022 was 0.58%. The share of “social sciences” was 7.33% in international science production.

The Islamic Republic of Iran ranks second among Islamic countries after Turkey in the fields of "humanities and arts" and "social sciences" in 2022. Charts 1 and 2 show the total number of arts and humanities citation index documents of 20 leading Islamic countries in WoS in 2022. Also, at the global level, the position of the Iran’s scientific productions in the fields of "humanities and arts" and "social sciences" is 34 and 28, respectively, which is much lower compared to the overall position of scientific production, which was 17.

In "humanities and arts" and "social sciences" Iran’s share is 8% of international science production, while 92% of international articles are indexed in other sciences. These results indicate that due to the strong capacity and background of the country in the field of "humanities and arts" and "social sciences", the international outputs in this field are very low and need planning to strengthen this field.

At the global level, 2% of scientific productions belong to the field of "humanities and arts", while in Iran this share is 0.58 and it is almost a quarter of the global trend. In the field of "social sciences", the share of the world is 14.13%, and Iran’s situation in this field is half of the world with 7.33%.
