The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024 Published
44 subject areas out of 73 Iranian universities are ranked below 500 in the world
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024 include 1,904 universities across 108 countries and regions.
The table is based on our new WUR 3.0 methodology, which includes 18 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across five areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook.
This year’s ranking analyzed more than 134 million citations across 16.5 million research publications and included survey responses from 68,402 scholars globally. Overall, 411,789 data points collected from more than 2,673 institutions that submitted data.
Among the 11 subject areas announced by The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024, Iranian universities were able to be among the top universities in the world in 10 subject areas. 73 universities of the Islamic Republic of Iran include in this ranking.
According to the major subject areas, the number of scholars in Medicine and Health is 33%, Multidisciplinary 23%, Engineering 20.5%, Basic Sciences 12%, Agriculture and Environment 10%, and Humanities and Social Sciences 1.7%.
One of the most important missions of Islamic World Science and Technology Citation and Monitoring Institute (ISC) is to provide the possibility to identify and introduce the best scholars with high number of citations. This is due to the fact that highly cited scholars are the most important factor in the growth and development of scientific systems. In addition, the number of institutions and highly cited scholars is one of the criteria of scientific authority at the world level.
The latest list of the highly cited Iranian scholars among the top 1% of the world in 22 subject areas has been extracted and monitored based on the Essential Science Indicators (ESI). As can be seen in chart 1, in 2023, 938 scholars were identified with the organizational affiliation of the Islamic Republic of Iran, which has grown by 12% compared to 2022. Fortunately, over the past decade, the number of highly cited scholars in the top 1% Iranian scholars has been growing.

Science and technology institutions’ share among the most cited scholars among the top 1% scholars
The Ministry of Science, Research and Technology and the Ministry of Ministry of Health and Medical Education each allocated 40% and 48% of the share of highly cited Iranian scholars to themselves. The complete information about the organizational affiliation of other scholars is shown in Table 1.

In 2023, University of Tehran, Tarbiat Modares University and Amir Kabir University of Technology, all from the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology and Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences and Tabriz University of Medical Sciences from Ministry of Health and Medical Education have got the highest number of top 1% scholars. Table 2 shows the share of each university in the number of highly cited scholars identified with Iran affiliation.

The share of 22 subject areas of Top 1% among highly cited Iranian Scholars
Based on 22 subject areas of Table 3, 23% of these scholars belong to Clinical Medicine. After this subject area, multi-disciplinary subject areas with 22.6 % includes highly cited Iranian scholars. The subject area of engineering has won the third rank (19%).
