ISC Reissued:
166 Subject Areas from 42 Iranian universities in the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2023
Shanghai Ranking began to publish World University ranking by academic subjects in 2009. By introducing improved methodology, the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) was first published in 2017. The 2023 GRAS contains rankings of universities in 55 subjects across Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences. More than 1,900 out of 5,000 universities across 104 countries and regions are finally listed in the rankings. The GRAS rankings use a range of objective academic indicators and third-party data to measure the performance of world universities in respective subjects, including research output (Q1), research influence (CNCL) , international collaboration (IC), research quality (Top), and international academic awards (Award). The index of international academic awards is based on Academic Excellence Survey (AES) conducted by Shanghai Ranking since 2017. Until April 2023, 1447 professors have participated in the survey. They are from 122 universities, and 21 countries/regions, covering 64 subjects. The results reveal 121 top journals in 43 subjects, 36 top awards in 29 subjects, and 31 top conferences for Computer Science & Engineering.
In ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2023, institutions are ranked in 55 subjects across Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences.
A total of 42 universities from the Islamic Republic of Iran are present in ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2023. Meanwhile, 34 universities were ranked in last year's ranking.
These 42 universities have participated in 166 fields, which are shown in Table 1 by subject areas. The Iranian universities have performed best in engineering and medical sciences with 101 and 37 fields, respectively.

Universities are ranked by several academic or research performance indicators, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, papers indexed in major citation indices, and the per capita academic performance of an institution. For each indicator, the highest scoring institution is assigned a score of 100, and other institutions are calculated as a percentage of the top score. The data distribution for each indicator is examined for any significant distorting effect; standard statistical techniques are used to adjust the indicator if necessary. Scores for each indicator are weighted as shown below to arrive at a final overall score for an institution. The highest scoring institution is assigned a score of 100, and other institutions are calculated as a percentage of the top score.
